The SMF's school-aged mentoring strand is an e-mentoring opportunity where you can support one of our young people as they navigate next steps in their education and career journey! By volunteering your time, you'll make a lasting impact on a young person in Sixth Form or S5 who's interested in pursuing a career in your sector.  Looking for some more information or have questions? All mentoring activity will take place on a secure messaging platform, with some opportunity for SMF-organised virtual meetups throughout the mentoring cycle from Spring-Winter.

What might you support with?
    • University or apprenticeship applications
    • Setting goals and strengthening soft skills
    • Learning about routes into careers
    • Applying for and getting work experience
A couple of things to note:
    • Suitability to mentor will rely on providing or completing an Enhanced DBS or PVG check. 
    • We make every effort to match as many volunteers as we can with a young person on our programme, but as we match based on student need, unfortunately can't always guarantee. If we aren't able to find you match we'll place you in our re-matching pool and share other ways for you to get involved! We're so appreciative that you're choosing to volunteer your time with us and want to make sure it feels meaningful for you as well!

To be a mentor, you'll need to have at least 6 months' experience  working in your sector, as increasing sector knowledge may be a key aspect of your mentoring relationship. We accept PhD students for our Biology and Chemistry sector and third year medical students and above for our Medicine sector--if that's you, select 'Yes' above!

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) or Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) service checks the criminal record of someone applying for a role.
We'll conduct a check free of charge if you don't have a certificate from the past six months.

Optional: If you don't have your DBS/PVG available to upload now, we'll be in touch at a later date to request it. If you do, please provide a clear scan/photo.

We'll do our best to match you with a mentee based on this information, but please note that we're not able to do this in all instances.

In order to start your DBS application, we need to collect some additional personal information.  This information will solely be used for the creation of your DBS application with our provider CareCheck. Because you have provided this information here you will not need to provide it separately to CareCheck, though they may ask for additional information throughout your check.

This information will be deleted upon your DBS clearance. If you do not complete your DBS check, this information will be deleted upon the start of our 2027 mentoring cycle and no later than July 2027.

✔️ You will undertake or provide an enhanced DBS or PVG background check (through us). 
✔️ You will comply with our Safeguarding Policy.
✔️ Follow all SMF mentoring and safeguarding processes, which includes not contacting your mentor outside of our secure platform unless expressly given permission to do so by the SMF.
✔️ You can commit to contacting your mentee at least every 2 weeks via our secure messaging platform from May - December
